Chapter Fifteen

Ivy

It's Saturday morning and Theo picked me up ten minutes ago. We’re walking up the street towards the beach, I think. He has been quiet ever since he got to my place. I glance at him, white shirt and boardies ready for a day at the beach. His blond hair has that messy look like he just got out of bed, and he looks like he hasn't shaved in a few days. I’ve noticed he doesn't shave often; he's got that hot surfy vibe going on. I'm really not sure why he is interested in me at all. Maybe that's what he is thinking about right now, that's why he is so quiet. This might be a mistake. Maybe he's not that keen after all.

"Is everything okay? You seem different today?"

His eyes roam over me, taking me in, and I feel even more insecure than normal around him. "I'm fine, just got lots on my mind."

"Oh, a case at work?" I forget how heavy his job must be at times.

"Amongst other things."

He's giving me nothing, and I'm starting to feel a bit uncomfortable. "We can do this another time if that would be better."

He turns to me, taking my hand. "This is exactly what I want to be doing today." His lips form a small smile for the first time since he picked me up.

I tilt my head to the side, trying to gauge his expression; he looks kind of sad or down. What's going on with him? "Okay, but if you—"

He cuts me off, placing his hand under my chin, making me raise my eyes to meet his. "I have been thinking about you all week, and we're finally getting to spend some time together. I'm going to make the most of it."

He takes my hand, and we continue down a narrow pathway to an opening onto the beach. The view is stunning! "This is beautiful. I haven't been here before."

"That's because it's a local secret," he says, wrapping his arms around me. We both just stand and enjoy the view in silence. "Come on, I have had a spot set up for us." He takes my hand and leads me along to a blanket that's been set up with a picnic basket. Looks like he might have had a bit of help with this. There are also two surfboards and wetsuits.

"Um, who are they for?" I say, pointing to the surfboards waiting on the sand.

He raises his brow. "Who do you think? I'm taking you for a surfing lesson."

I shake my head. Growing up in Dorrigo, we didn't have a beach anywhere near us. I'm not that great in the water, and I'm sure I'm going to embarrass myself in front of him. This seems like a bad idea. "Oh, I've never been surfing before. I'm kind of scared of going out that far in the water."

He wraps his arms around me protectively. It feels good to have him so close. "That's what you've got me here for, to keep you safe from the big bad sharks.
